Methodology

The test compared results from each platform using similar masks generated manually and automatically. The anonymized outputs were then rated from Very Bad, Bad, Good to Very Good based on two main criteria. First, the test measured whether the tool successfully erased the specified element without introducing unrelated or illogical elements into the background. Second, it examined the authenticity of the result—i.e. how well the tool concealed any evidence of alteration and ensured a background appeared natural and unaltered. The test included a collection of photorealistic, artistic, and mixed media images including ads, stock photography, and gaming illustrations. Images were also chosen for a variety of complex backgrounds and subjects.

Additional Findings

The test also returned some key findings as to the benefits and limitations of each tool.

  1. Quality and Reliability: Bria consistently returned high-quality results, even with complex masks. In contrast, Stability AI failed to process 21% of test cases due to input size limitations, while Canva encountered a 7% failure rate for unknown reasons. Adobe Firefly returned all results, but it limited output resolution to 4096x4096 pixels.

  2. Responsiveness to Masking Errors: Bria effectively handled masking inaccuracies. Adobe Firefly and Canva often generated unintended artifacts when masks were not pixel-perfect, impacting overall quality in both manual and automatic usage.

  3. Aesthetic Issues: Common problems included unnatural transitions between the removed area and the original image, particularly for Adobe Firefly, which struggled in 62% of manually masked low-rating cases. Canva and Stability AI also faced challenges with poor texture blending in the erased area, highlighting Bria’s ability to maintain aesthetics.

  4. Generation Instead of Erasure: In some cases, tools inadvertently generated new elements rather than erasing the intended objects. Adobe Firefly generated unwanted elements in 42% of low-rating results during manual usage, Canva in 24% of such cases, and Stability AI in 31% of low-rating results during automatic usage. This inconsistency further underscored Bria’s precision in maintaining the integrity of the original image while effectively removing objects.
